Project Options - Forks
Develop 'Twilight in the Forest' Informational Formats—with Molly Erickson
Project options include the following:
1. Develop exterior display posters for kiosks showing how to plan a Twilight Loop around the Forest, visiting settings from the books and movies, via campgrounds and trail opportunities.
2. Modify/reduce the above product to an 8 ½” x 11” mock-up hand-out or down-load.
3. Design a self guided ‘Twilight in the Forest’ resource for specific trails around Forks that capture the experience and settings from the book.
Develop and/or Present Twilight-Related Education Programs—with Molly Erickson
1. Develop evening programs around nocturnal species and night sounds.
2. Local bat species, habitat, life cycles, how Forest biologists survey and manage, etc.
3. Quileute lore (storytelling, carving, basket weaving, dancing)
4. Surrounding Native American stories (i.e. Hoh and possibly Makah and Elwha)
5. What makes a Rain Forest.
6. How is Forks weather created?
7. How were the local landforms carved?
8. Large mammals and their habitat, utilized by Twilight characters
9. How does climate change affect the area?
10. Incorporate local history as applicable (Early FS; CCC; Spruce Division; etc.)
Develop Technology-based to Engage Youth in 'Twilight in the Forest'—with Molly Erickson
1. Design a ‘Twilight in the Forest’ web page linked to the Forest Website that contains Twilight opportunities and information available, including a calendar of Twilight events in the Forest. (i.e. Scheduled programs, times, etc.).
2. Design an electronic scavenger hunt of Twilight settings on trails via GPS or geo-cache.
3. Design an on-line register for youth (and young at heart adults) to document their ‘Twilight in the Forest’ experiences on-line.
ATV Trails Inventory (GIS)--with Molly Erickson
Use GPS to mark locations of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Trails on Olympic National Forest land. Then, with this data, use GIS software to create a map of the locations.
Campground Educational Programs—with Molly Erickson
Develop and present educational materials and/or programs in Olympic National Forest campgrounds.
